Presentation:

1000 PlayStreets

The 1000 Play Streets Project is a project aiming to promote and enable Local Government Associations (LGAs) to empower communities nationally to take back their streets, resulting in more children and families outside playing with neighbours.

Play Australia has been funded to deliver this program across Australia in partnership with CoDesign, Nature Play Solutions, 7 Senses Foundation and LGA's.

The goals of the project are:

  • to increase numbers of 'less active' children and families playing outside in their neighbourhood streets (1000 Australians - particularly less actives);
  • to increase the number of regular play streets (18 streets activated x 3 sessions each = 54 sessions total);
  • to increase the number of LGAs and Community Groups delivering play streets (6 x LGAs/ Community Groups involved);
  • to effectively support LGAs and community groups to navigate process (red tape/ constraints) and improve resources to enable more families to participate in play streets;
  • to support LGAs and community groups to successfully market play streets to their communities;
  • to create a new national alliance of place-makers who care about play (CoDesign in Melbourne, Nature Play Solutions in Perth and 7 Senses in Brisbane and pilot LGAs in VIC, WA & QLD);
  • to co-develop a national approach to sustainable play streets;
  • to increase the profile of play; and,
  • to package guidelines/learnings and roll-out nationally alongside partners
