Countering Climate Change and Rising Costs - What can you do to help provide quality turf playing surfaces?
Climate change and cost increases pose significant challenges for those managing turf playing surfaces. These come on top of existing pressures including increased community expectations, greater foot traffic, reduced windows between seasons and constrained budgets.
This presentation will showcase the findings of a study in the Newcastle area, on the east coast of NSW. Since 2001, the amount of irrigation required to sustain a kikuyu playing field has since increased by 34%. At the same time, water prices have risen by almost 250%. When the increased water demand and prices are put together, over the past 17 years, the water cost for sustaining a kikuyu turf playing field has increased by 300%!
Faced with this exponential cost increase, we'll discuss the strategies that turf managers and sports planners can put in place to reduce irrigation demand, thereby countering these trends and the resulting impact on playing surfaces and budgets.
