Designer, MIEAust

Mike Hewson BE (Hons), MFA, MIEAust is a visual artist currently building several large-scale public art playgrounds. His award-winning projects pioneer new ways to merge conceptual art projects into the public realm by working closely with local government organisations.

The Public Art Playground

Sculptures tend to make the best play equipment, yet artists are rarely invited to design playgrounds (in a way that goes beyond token decoration). We rely solely on the imagination of play equipment manufacturers and landscape architects to design public environments for our children to play, explore risk and learn about themselves and the world. I believe there is a great opportunity to fundamentally revise the design paradigm for play areas and that artists should be involved in shaking this up. By late 2020 I will have constructed several world-class public art playgrounds in Australia that completely break from the typical vernacular on playground design. The ongoing success of these projects is due to carefully crafted procurement strategies, talented consultants, innovative contract and tender processes and strong political support.
