Going beyond world class trails to provide world class outcomes - Planning for the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination

The Warburton Mountain Bike Destination is the biggest mountain bike project ever undertaken in Australia, with funding of $11.3M. In partnership with land management agencies the team is looking well beyond trail planning to deliver successful outcomes for the community, using the mountain bike project as a catalyst for change.

The Upper Yarra Valley is an area of socio-economic challenge, with stagnant industry, poor health outcomes and social disadvantage. But the setting is amazing. Giant forests, lush fern gullies, huge hills and great potential for ecotourism.

The project team are using a holistic approach to planning not just trails, but a range of supporting infrastructure, programs, products and services that will create a hub of "outdoor active" tourism and local participation that will help address the socioeconomic challenges in an environmentally and culturally sensitive manner.
