Engaging the Forgotten Demographic in Active Play

The health and wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature are well known but for many people with disability, access to parks and reserves is not always possible. In 2016, the NSW-based wellbeing organisation, New Horizons, launched Parallel Parks, a virtual reality (VR) based initiative, to allow people with disability to experience and interact with nature. Now, with ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Parallel Parks is creating customised VR footage by utilising existing staff, rangers and other park users to create affordable and immediate solutions to inclusion, including a dedicated YouTube channel for professionals, park users and people with disability to upload and share experiences and knowledge about the natural environment. In this presentation, delegates will learn how these new technologies can be implemented within a short turnaround time, at minimal cost and with great impact on accessibility, inclusion and true participation for people with disability.
